The Benefits of Proper Home Insulation

Insulation is an important part of every home, and having it properly done has certain benefits.

Energy Efficiency

Before we talk about energy efficiency, let us first discuss the energy envelope. Buildings intended for human occupancy are composed of a roof, exterior walls and fenestrations: windows, entry doors and skylights. These insulated components create an enclosure that prevents heat transfer, which would otherwise cause heat loss during cold days and heat gain during hot days.

A properly insulated enclosure, therefore, requires less compensation from the heating and cooling systems, resulting in energy savings.

Improved Indoor Comfort

Another benefit of a properly insulated home is that it is more comfortable. Indoor temperatures would be more stable, with fewer chances of drafts forming during the winter season. When choosing replacement windows, check the energy ratings label. The U-Factor measures the amount of heat it allows inside. Therefore, the lower the value, the better its insulation will be. The Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) measures the amount of heat from sunlight the glass would allow, so the lower the value is, the better.

Quieter Indoors

Most types of insulation absorb vibrations. Therefore, the more efficient the insulation is, the better it is at reducing noise. Open a window, and compare the noise that gets into the room against when the window is closed: the difference should be readily noticeable.

The combination of foam insulation in the walls and double- or triple-pane glass packages in the windows and entry doors, along with proper weatherstripping, can make your home a quieter place to live.
