What Are Gutter Leader Heads?

A gutter leader head may seem an insignificant detail on a home’s exterior. However, it can serve as a nice finishing touch and provide an extra boost to the overall look of your home.

Apart from adorning your exterior, leader heads are quite functional, too.

Function

A leader head is basically a catch basin, which helps funnel water from the rooftop to the underground drainage system. It is typically installed under the soffit so that it can allow air into the line. Because of this, leader heads can help stop vacuum lock and prevent gurgling or excess noise.

Gutter leader heads are called various names, such as:

  • Conductor heads
  • Rain collectors
  • Rainhead
  • Rainwater head
  • Scupper boxes
  • Collector heads
  • Gutter heads

Leader heads are usually made from sheet metal, and they come in different shapes and sizes.

Style

When it comes to leader heads, there are several available styles and designs. Here are a few tips to help you select the best leader head for your home.

  1. Make sure the leader head matches the material and color of the gutter along the roof edge. Having different colors and materials may only distract the eyes so aim for visual coherence.
  2. Your leader head should match the architecture of your home. A cohesive style can enhance any look.
  3. Size and design are factors that determine the price of leader heads. Typically, larger leader heads and leader heads with intricate designs cost more.
  4. Copper or lead-coated copper is ideal for traditional homes. Meanwhile, leader heads made from polyethylene are usually cheaper, and they’re often recommended for their durability and lightness.
