3 Common Misconceptions About Wind Damage to Asphalt Shingles

Many people are divided when it comes to wind-damaged or wind-lifted shingles. This is due to the various misconceptions surrounding the subject. Oftentimes, issues with asphalt shingles are incorrectly attributed to wind damage when other factors may have been at play.

This is worrisome because your contractor may be missing an underlying cause for the damage to your roof shingles. They may also be implementing the wrong solutions since the root cause has not been addressed. If the actual problem remains unfixed, you’ll likely have to deal with the same issue repeatedly, and financing roof repair may only prove to be too costly.

In this article, All Angles Covered lists three of the most common misconceptions about “wind-damaged” asphalt shingles.

1. Wind-Damaged Shingles Are Not Always Obvious

Signs of wind damage are evident, especially upon close inspection. Apart from having reduced adhesion, wind-lifted shingles typically have creases, folds, tears or missing portions. These occur because of the wind pressure between the front and back of a shingle, which exposes more surface area and results in creases and folds.

2. Shingles With Inadequate Adhesion Are Wind-Damaged

Inadequate adhesion isn’t the only sign of wind damage. If the shingle tabs are poorly adhered with no signs of creases or folds, the issue may be as simple as improper installation by residential roofing contractors. Sometimes, unsealed shingles occur due to wear or the failure of the shingle’s sealant strip.

3. It’s Easy to Perform Tests Demonstrating the Strength Reduction of Shingles After a Storm

ASTM D7158, or the Standard Test Method for Wind Resistance of Asphalt Shingles (Uplift Force/Uplift Resistance Method), is considered in the roofing industry the proper method to determine the strength of shingles after a storm.

However, laboratories with the capacity to perform this test are few and limited, and the test can be expensive as well. That’s why some manufacturers use other methods, which usually deliver results quite different from what you can get through ASTM D7158.
